Music to include within my film, ideas

Within my film I wish to include emotional music to explain her isolation and vulnerable character. I feel music is such an important tool within a film, as music is key for identifying a character and also for making the audience able to connect with a character emotionally. I hope to play this music at the beginning of the film and to come in once again when her speech is abruptly interrupted by 'Bars and Lines' which is the effect I've used on my film, televisions use this when there is a problem within a certain channel.

I have a few ideas of what music i wish to use within my film are as follows:

Onerepublic- Lullaby

I personally love this song, i feel it's a slow, haunting song which explains the emotions of upset, feeling lost and isolation. I feel this are the appropriate feelings in which Daisy experiences on a daily basis. With such lyrics stating:
'Oh
As the light goes out,
Thoughts turn to angels
Over us'

I feel this is one chilling line which reflects Daisy's emotions of wishing to be taken to another place, it shows she believes in mythical creatures such as angels and how her hopes and reliance is on these mythical creatures. It shows her vulnerability and innocence, as people only associate angels with children playing.

I also love the line, 'As the light goes out' this suggests she's given up, which i feel is a strong and emotional lyric to be reflected as this could connote many things to the audience, such as suicide or she's ready to confront her past or even she's sinking further and further into a hole, mentally and cannot see a way out, she is becoming even more lost.

The beat of the song is very slow and very dreamy, which reflects with the title of the song, Lullaby. This reflects the idea she wants to just fall into a deep sleep until everything passes her, bury her head into the sand. Lullaby suggests a peaceful sleep, therefore this could even connote her to be suggesting suicide, it keeps that ambiguity for the audience which is also a key theme in which i wanted to provoke.

'Trees touch windows
Say their hellos
We hear this house as it settles in
Worry slips away
It don't know your name
It don't know where to find us'

This is a lyric from the second verse of the song 'Lullaby' i feel this really reflects the hope she still holds as a character. The line I find most comforting is the 'Trees touch windows, Say their hellos' I feel this reflects the idea she is not alone, I'm trying to put across she is isolated, however there is hope within this line, that maybe she will get out of this rut she has found herself in.

'Worry slips away, It don't know your name' I also feel this strongly reflects Daisy as a character also, it suggests she is still running and only feels safe, when she is in a certain place, where this place is? The audience do not know, therefore ambiguity is also a recurring strong theme within this character, especially if the music is reflecting the character, Daisy.

This is the second song which I was considering using within my film:

Keane- She Has No Time

I feel this song also reflects the idea of Daisy being lost and feeling her time is running out. It's such a strong song holding a equally strong message, what that message is? It's all dependant on your personal interpretation, which is what is so brilliant about choosing music for your character to be established by. I love the way the song starts of slow and vocally dominant, which very stripped back music within the background. The music that is played at the beginning is very hollow keyboard which i feels suggests the isolation, with the sound of wind I feel reflects how time is passing and she's still stuck.

'You think your days are uneventful
And no one ever thinks about you'

This is the first two lines of the song which i feel are the strongest. I feel this strongly reflects Daisy, with her isolation, worry and the truth that people are not thinking about her. It reflects the realism of how she is able to slip through the cracks and end up the character she is, constantly trying to run away from her problems. I also like the top line, as i feel it shows how every day is the same, uneventful, constant running from her problems.

'She says she has no time
For you now'

I also feels these two lines which make the chorus, also make this song strongly reflect Daisy's character. It reflects the idea how people have let Daisy slip through the cracks by not helping her, therefore she doesn't know what to do with herself, she's so lost and the realism, is the idea no one is helping her.

It's also a line which reflects the original influence of my film, and how people are constantly being allowed to slip through the cracks, even with Casey Johnson, a rich and famous lady and yet, she still suffered within depression leading to death.

'And see it all dissolve around you'

This is also another line which i love, it is stating she's viewing everything around her turn to dust. She's loosing her grip on reality and on herself, she's becoming further lost within society and mentally. It's such an emotional line, as it reflects how everything she has done, is ruined therefore inside she more and more hates herself and confused about who she is, therefore once again, reinstates the idea she is lost.

This is the last song which i thought appropriate to use within my film.

Damien Rice - Cold Water

Damien Rice is a very emotional and creative song writer. His song Cold Water i feel would be a perfect fit, even with just using the opening instrumental. The piano he uses, creates a hollow, chilling sound which fits perfect to reflect the isolating emotion with Daisy constantly feels. It starts off very quiet with Rice's vocals softly entering. The guitar is played very softly, leaving the hollow piano chords to be dominant within the song.

'Cold, cold water surrounds me now'

These are the first, opening lines to the song. I love these opening lines, as it reflects how everything around Daisy is unpleasant, confusing and cold, everything is cold. It's speaking from Daisy's point of view which i feel is also a strong factor of this song, as it's narrating Daisy's emotions upon the audience.

'Lord, can you hear me now,
Or am I lost?'

I also feel this is a strong lyric which reflects Daisy perfectly, as well as continuously speaking in first person for Daisy. It's making it obvious to the audience how she feels which i feel is better from the audience's point of view, as when something is made obvious, all of the audience are able to understand, not just a few.

I feel these two lyrics literally state strongly how lost Daisy is, and how she has tried everything including turning to god however still found no answers, which gives a strong indication how much trouble she is having. However i also feel the second line is extremely strong, as it withholds some self realisation from the character, perhaps she has realised how lost she is which could suggest a happy ending, but then again could now, it is in the state of a question, therefore ambiguity is still very strong within this song, as well as still being obvious to the audience of how she is feeling. Rhetorical questions never require an answer, they only indicate how someone is feeling, or what someone wants.

Overall, I feel they would be all suitable to use within my film, however I strongly feel Damien Rice's Cold Water, is the best song to use. I love the way it speaks to the audience, directly from Daisy's point of view, and the use of the rhetorical question enables the audience to think and place their thoughts within Daisy's character as well as arise ambiguity of the character. However, i need to edit the song in account to the edited footage therefore the rhetorical question might never get sung, however I love the chilling hollow isolating sounds from the piano on the chords I feel it explains a lot more about the character then perhaps the words do to the audience.
