Script for my short film

The scene takes place in the dining room, in which character ‘Daisy’ is reading a newspaper upside down. She is confronted by an ambiguous being and begins talking to the ‘camera’. There is nobody within the room, which is just the way Daisy likes it, it makes her feel secure, due the strong control, as she considers this as ‘her place.’ There are copies of her ‘script’ and newspapers spread across the whole table, the scripts representing the idea of her having to rehearse what she is about to say to the being in front of her, by following a script it allows her to repress her real personality, thus her fake and show-girl personality is present. Daisy speaks to the camera like she knows what it is/ who it is, however the audience do not realise or ever see what she is speaking to, until the end when they realise she’s confronting her memory and guilt.

Daisy: (Excited, Direct mode to the camera) you’ve come back again haven’t you, I know you would... this is what I really need, just... a second chance! -

(Camera begins to distance away from Daisy)

-Don’t go, I used to be a performer you know, all over the country... the world in fact! Some called me the ringleader; the boys called me erm... Dirty Daisy, but that doesn’t matter. You know, dictated how much attention I got, but now... it’s so quiet. It’s all quiet. It’s the dull, aching, frustrating, ear bleeding silence. It makes my ears bleed. It’s like they hear you, but they really aren’t listening, you know? It’s been difficult, so difficult, so isolated and alone... but I was young, and, yes, I admit I was ill back then. We all did it, we all took turns... we all showed the world what we could do, our performances where world news... we generated and created media//

(Starts shaking and scratching head with frustration)

Why are you doing this? The one chance I’ve got// You’re not real... you’re not there, you’re not there// (returns to reading the newspaper) It’s such a dark and un-rehearsed world, it’s almost like a video game, and we’re all characters being played by... god or something. (Slightly Aggravated) You’re just there all of the time, you anger and hurt me.
I have all of this work, just surrounding the table... to keep me busy. I don’t think about what i did as long as i have this work in front of me... this keeps me in another world, in a world all the way up there, away from this place, this place... feels like an itch you can’t scratch, like the shiver of an ice lolly on your teeth constantly attacking, whenever I’m in this world, there’s a big stabbing pain in my chest. (Look at the camera with desperation)

(Speaks to the camera) So, I ask you one more time, are you... please, just take me away with you? I’m scared, because of what I’ve//

Synopsis of my new film idea called 'Still lost'

My film follows a girl called Daisy who from the very beginning is a trapped and lost individual. She’s stuck in a time warp, not able to move or run away any further and move on as she is now held back by her past. Her schooling, family and personal life are strongly falling apart as she struggles to believe her past was in fact, reality. She is permanently stuck. This is apparent by the falling of her school grades and her social life; she’s loosing friends by the day due to her ‘strange’ and ‘weird’ personality and attitude.

Her mother was a strong performance artist who encouraged Daisy to encourage her younger sister, Laura to not take her epilepsy medication and to be exposed to an excessive amount of strobe lighting in front of an audience, calling this ‘performance art.’ Left brain damaged and mentally disabled at the age of ten partly caused by Daisy, she is an alone and struggling individual.

Every so often she receives visits from ambiguous and strange spirits and with each one there is a strong element of hope in which they have come to visit her, to take her away from this place; but they never do. It is only apparent, later on in the story these spirits are in fact her memory and guilt in which she must accept and confront before she is able to succeed and move on with her life.

Influenced by the tragedy of the Haiti earthquake, she, like Haiti has been part let down by our society. The idea and subject of how far must someone or something, have to struggle to be able to have that successful second chance, dealing with the ideas of poverty, greed and wealth. It is also influenced by the public’s affection with Celebrity, how they so commonly slip through the cracks of the public’s fingers, such as Michael Jackson and most recently Casey Johnson in which become a circus in which all they need is help by the society in which crave them.

An essay explaining the conventions of the genre, Drama

The genre of Drama seems to be used more for independent films rather than large blockbusters which are trying to target such a large audience. There are however, still as many conventions in which film makers use to determine a film to be part of the ‘drama’ genre.

One strong convention of the genre is the idea of the story line being strongly serious and realistic; there is usually very little comedy, in particular slap-stick comedy within a drama. They require a strong serious storyline in order to be suggested as part as that particular genre. Some examples from this from films I have personally seen which include strong serious storyline are: Thirteen, Slumdog Millionaire and The Burning Plain. There is very rarely a strong climatic and heroic ending in these drama films, usually the endings result in reinstating balance between their own lives which are usually firstly unsettled by who they are as a person, or their family being dysfunctional.

The dramas are usually based upon life situations and a few sub-genres of which Dramas are based on are: Teen-dramas, Action-drama and Period Dramas:
Teen Dramas: These specific types of dramas are based around the constant growing pains which a stereotypical teenager are faced with. These situations can be family, relationship, work or school based and films in which support this specific sub genre are the films: Thirteen and Kids. Stories in this sub-genre can be very brutal and explicit which tends to target the appropriate audience as adults don’t necessarily like the explicit scenes, as my mother walked out when I was personally watching Thirteen as she finds it embarrassing and also inappropriate to watch such genres with her child.

Action-Dramas: These specific types of dramas are based upon a strong, powerful storyline however they also include action. Films such as Hancock and I Am Legend, which both star Will Smith both are films which support this genre, as the story lines are still powerful and personal for the main characters however they also include more blockbuster conventions in them, in this case is action. These can attract a strong and large audience due to the fact they are still both independently and interestingly made, however they include an extra element in which may appeal people more to watch the film.

Period Drama: Film such as The Duchess and Pride And Prejudice are both films which support this genre and in this certain genre, the dramas are usually set in the past, in Pride and Prejudice’s case it was set beginning of 18th Century, The Duchess was also set within this period. These dramas have to include and depend on costume and setting in order to fully establish to the audience what period of time this film is in fact set.

The idea of Dramas portraying real life strong and powerful story lines, the characters are usually display strong realism, they don’t usually include narcissistic or fetishist elements in which some films, mainly blockbusters would as, it’s down to basically realism for the specific target audience and the idea of these dramas don’t have the finance Blockbuster films have. The characters seem to be strongly accented to suggest where they where originally from, to suggest they are real people, they are never usually extravagantly dressed with designer labels or drive expensive cars.

Another convention is the idea of the stories involving intense character development and interactions which basically is the idea of the characters growing and maturing personally and having to move on from a certain past or problems in which they faced / still face in the past or present. And also the idea of intense characters interactions reflects the idea of a drama involving strong and powerful stories and acting from one character to another. In terms of a climax, this is usually the case with dramas; instead of such a strong heroic finale to close a film there’s usually an intense and emotional ending, resulting in the main character solving and ending their personal problems.

Dramas are not focused on special effects at all, with dramas being mostly independently made there is simply not the finance to afford these extras however, they are never really needed as the story lines and characters have such strength and power, special effects are not specifically needed.

Television Drama has also branched from this genre, creating drama for the smaller screen: Television. Medical dramas, teen dramas and action dramas are strongly used to entertain participating audiences at comfort in their own homes.

There are many conventions in which Dramas use and audiences are used to seeing from this genre of film, therefore I hope to use these conventions and create an original and powerful short film based upon these conventions however, I always like to create my own individual ideas and stamps upon my personal projects.

Change of idea

I have recently reviewed the ideas of production work which i originally wanted to create and have decided i am going to change my idea, I've decided to create a short film within the genre of Drama and have created the synopsis which has been posted below:
